My Approach to Depression Therapy in NYC

Depression can show up in our lives for various reasons. I often think of depression as your way of coping with what is happening or has happened in your world. Approaching depression from this angle lets us look at ways to cope with the present, while potentially untangling past hurts or trauma.

In my work as a depression therapist in NYC, I offer a space to show up without shame. I like to work with people to understand what factors may be impacting feelings. This could include anything from a relationship ending, unemployment, to the impact of systemic racism or patriarchy (not to exclude the oppression of ableism, heteronormativity, etc).

I show up in the therapy space as an authentic human. I will ask questions as you feel comfortable to help us both understand you better. I believe that you know yourself best, and I am here to help explore, guide, and companion you.

In my work, I like to focus on what ways people have coped in the past. I then like to work collaboratively with clients to sort through what is helpful and what is not.

I incorporate somatic components in my work. I’ve trained with the Trauma Resource Institute (TRM), which looks at how our nervous systems respond to experiences. In that work, I can offer tools to help regulate your nervous system.

As a trauma informed therapist, my work in depression therapy takes time to look at past traumas. In looking at those experiences, we can explore what feels like a manageable way of addressing them. It may incorporate wellness tools, but may also include teaching our bodies to process the past hurts. I understand that trauma is often connected to depression.

I offer a space free from shame to explore and understand your experiences. We will work together to find a way that feels good for you to move through feelings.

 Depression Therapy in NYC FAQs

  • Psychotherapy can be beneficial in treating depression. DIfferent therapists may come with different therapy approaches. My approach is to look at the different parts of who we are, and to work to understand how those parts help us move through life. Additionally, I use somatic techniques in psychotherapy. Understanding the nervous system, and how it helps us regulate, helps in processing hurt and trauma. It also helps us learn means of coping along the way.

  • Symptoms of depression can include sadness and loss of interest. It may come with hopelessness. Depression may also include a lack of energy or restlessness. Sometimes depression can be angry outbursts. Guilt and self-blame can be signs of depression as well. Suicidal thoughts may also come with depression. It is not uncommon for anxiety to come alongside depression.

  • There is no one set cause of depression. It can often be tied to trauma, oppression and/or situational factors. This may or may not connect to genetic or biological causes. My first approach depression is to look at it as a nervous system response to something that is happening or has happened in life.

  • Therapy with antidepressants is usually more effective than just antidepressants. There are also people who use therapy without introducing medication to work with their depression. Having space to explore and process feelings is often a helpful approach for coping with depression.
